As he explains (of course) in the album's liner notes, he has been in the thick of New York City club culture since the early '80s, and he takes the opportunity here to pay tribute to a number of dance music strains that have fallen in and out of fashion — in a couple cases, they've recently fallen back into fashion — including some angles he hasn't taken in well over a decade. The sturdiest, most appealing tracks tend to be where Moby breaks out with some highly energized combination of rollicking pianos, stabbing keyboards, and random divas, mixing and matching rave, Hi-NRG, and disco: "Everyday It's 1989," "Stars," and "Disco Lies" (featuring a vocalist who is nearly a dead ringer for a young Taylor Dayne) would've had no place on any of the last five Moby albums. What is long maligned and what is trendy sometimes occurs simultaneously, as on "I Love to Move in Here" (featuring Grandmaster Caz), a mid-tempo house track that can be sub-categorized as both hip-house (inciting wicked flashbacks for most haters of either component) and Balearic (as it causes that loosey-goosey, anesthetized-but-still-beaming sensation, prevalent in several of the hippest dance tracks released during 2007 and 2008). The poorly timed, not-so-appealing moments — "257.zero," "Alice" — with their distant transmission spoken bits and droning raps, might sound in step whenever the Soul Jazz label gets around to releasing rarity compilations with contents resembling Astralwerks' late-'90s compilations for MTV's Amp program. The disc's latter 20 minutes, containing contemplative, string-laden tracks, would be as suited for the Pure Moods series (i.e., beside Yanni, Dave Koz) as past tracks "Porcelain" and "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters." A good number of Moby fans who began to follow the producer's moves well before Play will be inclined to think of Last Night as the best Moby album since Everything Is Wrong. That the album involves several unself-conscious, rush-inducing tracks (rather than the once-expected token track or two) is enough for that opinion to have validity. Диск открывает достаточно показательная для нынешнего творчества дискодивы композиция Gotta Be Forever - дань актуальному ныне электрофанку. Но Глория Гейнор по-прежнему верна идеалам бурной молодости - и в целом альбом все-таки больше тяготеет к осовремененному диско с сильными вкраплениями соул и элементами техно, как например, в композиции I Never Knew (HQ2 Radio Edit).Несколько упрощая, содержимое диска можно разделить на две примерно равные части. С одной стороны, канонические дискохиты: ритм крутится вокруг 120 ударов в минуту, басы тихой сапой вырисовывают свои мелодии, постоянно повторяются ломаные октавные ходы. В итоге звук получается немного суховатым, его разбавляют лишь струнные и духовые инструменты. Яркий пример тому - Just No Other Way.А вторая половина треков более медленная и спокойная. Пущей интимности добавляют характерные для диско вздохи, придыхания и шепот. Из этой серии I Never Knew, I Wish You Love, Let It Rain и другие - чистой воды диско-фанк-баллады.Несмотря на свой почтенный для эстрадной певицы возраст, Глория Гейнор держит марку. It has been compiled by Michael Andresen who is also known for his own productions as 12 Moons and Healer. The compilation features a genuine collection of who's who from the Swedish dance scene.First out is the deep dub of Stress Assassin whose debut album on Spiral Trax earlier this year received huge reviews. The Swedish music magazine, 'Groove' even claimed it as "one of the best albums of the year".Second is the sunny, reggae influenced 'Beach Bum Drums' by 12 Moons, which for sure will put a smile on your face on a rainy day.Next out is Dab Screen, who is no less than Sebastian Mullaert from Son Kite/Minilogue, one of Sweden's premier trance and progressive producers. Sebastian is also known for his chill-out productions as Ooze. Here he teams up with Daniel Skantze from Fingertwister, another dub producer from the south of Sweden.Human Blue is another producer from Gothenburg, who released a highly acclaimed trance album earlier this year. It received great attention from DJ's such as John'00' Flemming who licensed two of the tracks for his Euphoria mix CD. Here Human Blue lets the pieces come together for a chilled-out experience together with one of our local DJ's, Floyd.S-Range, another top quality producer managed to take some time off to make us a down tempo track while he was putting the final touch to his new album.Continuing with Matenda, a fairly new name in the Gothenburg scene, even though he has already released an album and a bunch of singles.Next out is a true legend in the history of electronic music; Robert Leiner, who has returned after years of techno exile in Belgium to his home town, Gothenburg. From the early nineties and onwards, Robert Leiner and his moniker The Source Experience was one of the most influential producers on the burgeoning global techno scene. After one album and a few singles that had found surprising success in Japan, the producers changed the lineup, keeping Michaela Rose and replacing the two other girls with Jasmin Vetter and Sandra Lauer. Vetter, a former gymnast, also became the trio's choreographer and Lauer, soon to be billed simply as Sandra, assumed the position of a lead vocalist. The first single of the updated Arabesque, "Hello, Mr. Monkey" went to number one in Japan. The Far East remained the band's biggest market, with numerous albums and compilations released over the years. However, Arabesque's success in their homeland was very modest, with only one single, "Marigot Bay," entering the German charts at number eight in 1981. In 1984, they disbanded and Sandra embarked on a successful solo career with the songs written by her future husband Michael Cretu (of Enigma fame.) Over the next four decades, as a strong presence in the world of music, she was part of the recording of around 40 albums. In the beginning of her career in the '60s, she sang folk tunes. At some point in the '70s, she moved on to rock. By the '80s she turned her attention fully to something that was one of her first loves: the blues. In between all of that recording, Gillespie the actress stayed in the spotlight on the theater stage in shows like Jesus Christ Superstar, and in films like The Hound of the Baskervilles.A young Dana Gillespie began performing folk music at festivals where she had large and diverse audiences to please. It gave her the perfect chance to polish her skills and learn to entertain, as well as to simply perform. During those first few years, Gillespie recorded a number of singles and two albums on the Decca and Pye labels. By 1973, she had moved on to the major label RCA and found herself working with David Bowie, who stood in as producer on a number of her recordings. The '70s saw her release such albums as Weren't Born a Man and Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle. When not performing behind the microphone, Gillespie was working behind the camera in films like Sink or Swim, Mahler, and the cult classic, The People That Time Forgot, which was a sequel to The Land That Time Forgot.In the '80s, Gillespie maintained a hectic professional schedule, leading a double life, and maybe a triple one at times. She kept at her music, touring through the United States, Europe, and other countries. She also went back into the studio to complete several albums, including I'm a Woman, Blue Job, Move Your Body Close to Me, Below the Belt, Hot News, and Sweet Meat. She continued to show off her acting abilities, and her beauty, in movies like Parker, Scrubbers, Bad Timing, and Strapless. In between the rest, she fit in numerous television appearances.No one could accuse Gillespie of slowing down in the '90s - not with the more than a dozen albums she released that decade. She entered the new millennium much the same way. By these later years, she had come full force into the blues, her voice reaching that edge, her life experiences varied enough to feel and understand the songs she both sings and writes. Some of the tunes fans will find on albums from this Gillespie period are "Who's Got the Blues to Blame," "Give Me Your Best Shot," "The Sky Will Still Be Blue," "Guardian Blue Angel," "You Make Me Feel So Good," "Who Blew the Blues Away," and "Turning Over a Blue Leaf." Take Dimitri from Paris, for example. A king of lounge-y disco-house behind the decks, he scored huge with all of his mix CDs, most notably the Playboy Mansion series, which catapulted him from underground tastemaker to international player. Often in the case of such high-profile DJs, an eventual artist album is released to excessive fanfare, only to disappoint when placed against the diversity and creativity that can be displayed on a DJ mix, where the best records by a variety of producers are all assembled together. However, in the case of this Japanese import of all new original material, the press and public at large seem to have overlooked it completely, which is a shame since Dimitri delivers a fantastic array of disco and lounge-pop songs that are informed by, yet don't mimic, his lauded DJ style. Dimitri heightens his deep disco senses on "Not Quite Disco" and "Brooklyn," which he recorded with Masters at Work affiliates Los Amigos Invisibles. He also works with Japanese vocalists Kisen Horino, Helena Noguerra, and Maki Nomiya to create Bacharach-esque pop confections and joins with acid jazz gurus Omar and Victor Davies on "Strong Man (For Real)" and "This Is Your Life," respectively, with both supplying soulful vocal parts. Unlike Dimitri's debut album, Sacrebleu, released prior to his rising DJ status in 1996, Cruising Attitude stays clear of any sample-heavy club fare or studio trickery in favor of far more mature grooves. That territory belongs mainly to Europe and Japan (including hot spots in Tokyo, London, Munich, Berlin, Rome, and even Helsinki), and although it doesn't include a preponderance of what mainstream jazz fans may think of as jazz, it's all the more appealing and intriguing for it. Still, the JAZZANOVA collective are nothing if not traditional in their contemporary feel, and the tracks they've selected are as often as not completely unprogrammed, usually including only an occasional electric bass or guitar as evidence of the passing of time. Early in the disc, the Finnish Dalindeo and the Japanese Sleep Walker contribute fine acoustic tracks. Contemporary, programmed jazz (or sometimes simply multi-tracked) music is eventually assimilated into the whole, with highlights from Two Banks of Four, Dwight Trible's Build an Ark, and an extravaganza from JAZZANOVA themselves with help from Bembe Segue. This was later accompanied by "rapping" (a rhythmic style of chanting). An original form of dancing, and particular styles of dress, arose among followers of this new music. Cosmic Baby's music was always a Cosmic Baby psychogramme, a process of emotional declaration from a no holds barred romantic dedicated to opening himself to people in the most direct and intimate fashion. Logically you are then exposed to attack and Cosmic certainly suffers most trying to appropriately assimilate the conflicting messages: from crowds moved to tears in 1993 to the current hefty criticism that started in later years. After the break with the past in "Loops of Infinity", "Heaven" is the first release to at least partly directly recapture the sound-pictures of "Stellar Supreme! and "Thinking About Myself! and dedicate itself to the wide-ranging instrumentalisation of hyper-harmonic ostinatos. On their debut Betcha Bottom Dollar, the Sisters' style is their substance; it's not a coincidence that the founding Puppini, Marcella, worked for fashion icon Vivienne Westwood before forming the group. Fortunately, the trio's style — vintage '40s outfits, cheeky covers of new wave and post-punk classics and all - manages to stay on the likeable, not grating, side of kitsch. Taken individually, the trio's voices aren't spectacular, but they blend together nicely enough to create a convincing homage to the heyday of vocal harmony pop in the '30s and '40s. A very pleasant "Mr. Sandman," a pretty, languid "Java Jive" and "Sway" are among the best vocal pop standards on Betcha Bottom Dollar, but interestingly enough, the Puppini Sisters often sound less campy on the songs they remake than on the classics. Not surprisingly, the original versions of the tracks they've chosen to give three-part harmony makeovers have strong melodies and distinctive singers, so it's not really all that surprising that Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" sounds lovely with three-part harmonies, or that their version of Blondie's "Heart of Glass" fits right in with "Mr. Sandman." There are times on Betcha Bottom Dollar that things feel a little too knowing and ironic, as on the chirpy cover of the Smiths' "Panic," and the album might be a little too long for the mood it's trying to sustain.
